Farm to Table Really is Better

Farmers markets are open throughout the week in different locations – but the weekend is our favorite time when it comes to browsing the markets because there are so many places with so much to see, taste, and hear!

We love visiting local farmer’s markets. It’s such a fun way to meet so many wonderful people in this amazing city we call home – and support local farmers and small business owners. Vendors are always friendly and engaging. It’s a fun time for our entire family too. There’s something for everyone.

The West End Farmer’s market is one of my favorites because it’s right around the corner – so that’s where I start. But I end up all over the city and beyond.

We love to pop by West End Farmers Market to snag some C&C’s cinnamon roll dippers with caramel sauce. Have you tried these?! If not, you are missing an incredible treat. And with Ironclad coffee, what’s not to love?!

There are lots of yummy sweets and, fresh, homemade breads to choose from. We love these Yummy Scones and delicious white rolls from Great Harvest Bread Company. We may have tried more than one or two kinds.

We picked up some fresh produce and herbs from Liberty Tree Farms, located in Bumpass and they were so much better than we anticipated. There’s nothing like farm fresh for sure!

Farmers markets are perfect places to find some great jellies, jams, sauces, and unusual items like Pickled Jalapeno Peppers too. Most of the vendors are happy to share tips on how to use their products, and even some great recipes that take advantage of seasonal produce and products. Just ask them and you’ll find they’re happy to share.

Strawberries, one of our favorites from Agriberry in Hanover, make for some yummy desserts! Check out their site because they’re ‘popping up’ all over the place on different days of the week – you can find them at lots of local markets.

Oh, and don’t get me started on these delicious cherry pies we grabbed at a market for the trip home (they may or may not have made it all the way home).

Did I mention the incredible delicacies from Longview Farm in Ruther Glen? Who wouldn’t love White Chocolate Cranberry Nut Granola Bars or Cinnamon Swirl Quick Bread?! Of course you have to taste test it all.

Farmers markets are the place to go for homemade lotions, soaps, and other products. A few weeks ago, I found the most fragrant lavender candle and some great hand lotion that I love – by The Freckled Farm Soap Company, a goat milk soap company-based in Goochland.

And homemade soaps are the best! Coffee soap? Okay – I’m up for that! I mean you can’t get too much coffee in your life – right?

RVA is lucky to have so many wonderful farmer’s market options all over the city.  Visit the Local Harvest website to find locations, hours, and more information on all area farmer’s markets.

And let us know about the best things you find at the market so we can check them out too.
