I don’t know about you, but when I walk out of the hair salon I feel like a million bucks. You know that feeling…when you walk out waving like Miss America? That’s exactly how I feel when I leave Rustique, a locally owned hair salon here in Richmond.
Megan purchased the original Simon and Gregory space off Ridge Road in 2012. She had casually checked out the building and although wasn’t sure she wanted to actually open her own salon, she couldn’t stop thinking about it. Two weeks later, she picked up her keys and the work began.
Megan’s dad, Charlie, temporarily left his home in Chicago and moved in with her for 6 weeks to refurbish the salon from top to bottom. He did it all from cleaning to painting to carpentry work, and everything in between. He started every morning at 5AM working hard until 9 or 10 at night. Now that’s a dedicated dad!
Seven weeks later, they welcomed their first client!
People come in from all of Richmond, but many of her clients are right there in the neighborhood, giving it that close, community feel. When choosing a name for her business, she knew she wanted it to be rustic, but in a boutique setting. She combined those two together and Rustique was born.
Personally, I have always loved the décor in Rustique. I love the simple, clean lines, the soothing colors and the small rustic touches. I’m consistently greeted with a smile and typically run into a friend or neighbor there. And obviously I love the stylists…I’ve seen my personal fave, Kristy, for nearly 13 years. “I can hardly believe this is my job. I love coming to work everyday,” admits Megan. She loves her co-workers, loves her clients and we all love her!
Megan’s Dad is just one of the gang. When he’s visiting Richmond, you can often see him sitting in the back room of the salon chatting or hanging some new shelves.
As with a lot of locally owned businesses, “the biggest challenge is balance,” says Megan. “I’m here everyday of the week. That’s a good thing and a bad thing.” But Megan truly enjoys her job and loves her co-workers which makes all of that hard work worth it.
Plus it’s probably pretty great to see clients wave like Miss America as we walk out the door.
