Greenbrier Getaway

We were looking for a fun spot, within close proximity to RVA for a quick weekend getaway. A friend suggested The Greenbrier, a national historic landmark and world class resort that’s been welcoming guests since 1778. We’ve been wanting to try it out for quite some time, so it was perfect.

It was a quick drive, only a couple of hours from RVA. As soon as we walked through the front doors, greeted with sweet peach tea, The Greenbrier’s signature drink, I was sold…and wondering why in the world we’d never visited here before.

It was breathtaking. I love decorating and design so this was a dream come true. The colors, the wallpaper, the chandeliers…in my book, the wilder the better. I was like a kid in a candy store. I took picture after picture, each one of them looking more beautiful than the other. I have always loved Dorothy Draper so I was beyond excited to see her work throughout the resort.

We had a delicious southern comfort lunch at Draper’s with some made from scratch desserts at the ice cream bar. This place is as bright and colorful as Draper herself.

It was a pretty cold and dreary weekend, but you’d never know it sitting inside these beautiful rooms…cozied up with a cup of coffee and a good book by the fire. Afternoon tea, a tradition since the 1930’s was filled with homemade, freshly prepared pastries and cookies.  The Greenbrier’s legendary mint julep was a fun cocktail before a delicious dinner at Prime 44 West, an upscale and inviting classic steakhouse.

The casino was fun and colorful and full of energy. And we had good luck for a few rounds of —— until we didn’t. At 10PM each night, dancers waltz through the main casino and guest are given a glass of champagne for a toast.

It was a great getaway on a cold weekend in January. We took our kids on a last hurrah of summer in late August this year and were able to enjoy outdoor hikes, the beautiful infinity pool and fun outdoor activities. We had a picnic on a beautiful summer night and had fun exploring the grounds.

A few trips to Draper’s made it that much sweeter!
